Caterina Agostini works with digital texts and editions, text analysis, digital mapping, and the International Image Interoperability Framework in the humanities. At the University of Notre Dame, Caterina collaborates on the edition of Thomas Harriot’s papers and the Interoperable Text Framework, a project based at the Navari Family Center for Digital Scholarship, John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology and Values, and Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society, as well as the Bodleian Library in Oxford and Cambridge University Libraries.

Caterina earned her Ph.D. from Rutgers University and her M.A. in Classics and the History of Science from Padua University. Her doctoral dissertation, Scientific Thinking and Narrative Discourse in Early Modern Italy, is a highly interdisciplinary analysis of early modern scientific writing in the Italian vernacular, accompanied by digital humanities projects. Her current book manuscript examines medical cultures in the early modern period in Italy and Europe.

She has developed a digital edition and IIIF applications for The Thomas A. Edison Papers, and a digital edition, translation, and teaching companion for Goro Dati’s La Sfera (The Globe), an Italian Renaissance treatise on astronomy and geography. Caterina has published or forthcoming research with The University of Chicago Press, GeoHumanities, Interdisciplinary Digital Engagement in Arts & Humanities, La parola del testo: Rivista internazionale di letteratura italiana e comparata, Palgrave Macmillan, Cambridge Scholars, and Galilaeana, among others.

“Currency, Culture, and the Ron D’Argenio Collection of Coins and Antiquities” is Caterina’s exhibit at Seton Hall University’s Walsh Gallery. She has advanced cultural heritage projects at PHAROS-The International Consortium of Photo Archives and Europeana Pro, and she co-chairs the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) and the Transcription Challenge Framework. Caterina is a Phi Sigma Iota member, promoting the humanities on all fronts.
